University of Wisconsin–Madison

Meet with Us

Welcome to UW-Madison! We are eager to work with you. Mike is our first-year pre-health student specialist. He facilitates our pre-health orientation (“Preparing for Professional Programs in Health Care”), meets with first-year students every Friday morning for drop-in advising during fall and spring semesters (“First Year Fridays”), and also runs four-year planning workshops for first-year students.

In addition, as a first-year student, you have access to pre-health advisors five days a week (Monday-Friday) via email at questions@prehealth.wisc.edu.

Please make use of all these first-year student resources:

  • Preparing for Professional Programs in Health Care (sign up here). This orientation is a great introduction to all things pre-health.
  • First-Year Fridays every Friday during fall and spring semesters (9-12 at CPHA, Suite 205 in the Middleton Building)
  • Four-Year Planning Workshops (look for announcements in the CPHA newsletter)
  • Quick question? Please email us at questions@prehealth.wisc.edu!

And please make an appointment to have a longer conversation with a CPHA advisor after your first year on campus!

First year student? Please see the First-Year Advising tab for advising options.

If you are an alum, please call (608.263.6614) or email (questions@prehealth.wisc.edu), and we will help you arrange an appointment. If you are not living in Madison, we are still very happy to meet with you by phone or Skype. Just let us know your preference. Please know that there is no time limit to your access to our services. We’re here to support you for as long as you want to work with us.

If you are a second-year, third-year, fourth-year, fifth-year and or transfer student, please make an appointment to talk with us about your pre-health interests and plans using Starfish.

APPLICATION STATEMENT APPOINTMENTS

The number of application statements that an advisor reviews is up to the individual advisor. Advisors may choose to review two or three drafts at most of application statements. Please plan accordingly. To make the most of these appointments, we recommend that you have a complete draft to work on with an advisor. You do not need to make your statement perfect before meeting to talk about it, but the more time you spend working on it before coming to us, the better use we can make of our time with you.

We ask that you email the statements you want to review with an advisor at least 24 hours before your appointment. And regarding secondaries, we ask that you pick one to four that you want to focus on in a 60-minute appointment, and that you tell us what these are in the email you send with your drafts in advance of your appointment.

The summer before you plan to apply is a great time for a first application-planning appointment. If you begin this conversation before then, great. If you wait until the semester (or even a week) before you apply, no problem. Come and talk with us. We will support your planning and preparation wherever you are at in the process.

If you are an applicant and cannot find an appointment at a time you are free to meet, please call our office (608.263.6614) or email us (questions@prehealth.wisc.edu) and we will find a time for you.

We recommend 60-minute appointments for most application conversations.

  • Application planning and timing — We will review your experiences, courses, other admissions requirements, and discuss the optimal timing of your application.
  • Personal statements — Please send your personal statement to your advisor 24 hours before you meet. We will review up to two drafts of each personal statement.
  • Secondary essays — Please send your essays to your advisor 24 hours before you meet (30-minute appointments for 1 or 2 essays, 60-minute appointments for 3 or 4 essays). We will review up to 4 essays in an appointment.
  • Mock interviews — In the appointment note, please tell us the interview format (traditional/MMI) you want to practice and the school(s) where you will be interviewing.

Summer is application season, and CPHA is here to help. We offer special drop-ins for applicants throughout the summer. Appointments are available to everyone who has completed your first year of coursework at UW-Madison, as well as all to applicants, alumni and transfer students.
